Ingredients

  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • 1 pound ziti or penne
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced (2 teaspoons)
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes, drained
  • 1 (26-ounce) jar spaghetti sauce or marinara sauce
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons chopped fresh basil, plus minced fresh basil for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
  • 2 teaspoons fresh oregano, or ½ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups grated fresh mozzarella cheese, plus more to taste
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
How to Make It
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 9 × 13-inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook the pasta according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, or until the onion is tender. Add the meat and cook until browned.
  4. Drain any grease from the browned beef and stir in the tomatoes, spaghetti sauce, basil, salt, oregano, and pepper. Simmer for about 5 minutes.
  5. Add the sour cream and pasta and stir until combined. Taste and adjust the seasoning. Transfer half the mixture to the prepared baking dish and top with 1 cup of the mozzarella. Pour the rest of the pasta mixture on top. Top the pasta with the remaining 1 cup mozzarella and the Parmesan. Add a little extra cheese if you like it really cheesy. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbling. Top with fresh basil just before serving, if desired.
