White Rice Recipe

Mysore Style CookingSouth Indians are rice eaters; they eat rice with sambar, curry and curds. Rice is a staple of the Indian diet. There are several kinds of rice dishes that are all delicious and colorful. However, in the past, the nutritional value of the rice has not been good, because traditionally polished rice has been used. With increasing nutritional awareness, we are now starting to use unpolished rice. There is also a variety of red rice available. If possible, use unpolished or red rice for all the rice recipes.

Some rice dishes are a meal in themselves. These include Lime Rice, Ghee Rice, Fried Rice, Sesame Rice, Mixed Vegetable Pulav, Fenugreek Potato Pulav and Tomato Pulav.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz (250 g) white rice
  • 17 fl oz (500 ml) water
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tsp oil
How to Make It
  1. Clean, wash and drain rice.
  2. Put rice into a heavy-bottomed pot or pressure cooker with water, salt and oil, reduce the heat and cover with the lid. Cook for 15-20 minutes in a pot or 5-6 minutes in a pressure cooker.
  3. Serve hot with sambar, curry and curds.
